Elan Yarric stood at attention, trying not to stare down the Bajoran officer. An old habit from his earlier Cardassian days, he had realized as soon as he saw her that he needed to be careful. He had no need or love for the Federation, and his Cardassian loyalty was as strong as ever. However, he had worked hard to get to this position, and he wouldn't let some silly slip up with some lowly Bajoran officer strip him of his rank. Almost immediately the earlier doubts he had had come back. Is this really right for me? Should I be helping a different government, one that could go to war with Cardassia quite easily?
He shook it off as he always had, and stepped forward from the line. He stood at attention, saying "Lieutenant Elan Yarric....reporting for duty." Then, with a nod from the captain, he went on. "Sir, a few minutes ago we received a message from Copernicus. We're granted leave on your prerogative. Just say the word, and we'll be on our way."
